New book addresses the ‘whole person’ needs of today’s students

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Elaine and Henry Brzycki's new book "Student Success in Higher Education: Developing the Whole Person through High-Impact Practice" draws on the educators' more than 30 years of professional experience as higher education leaders, teachers and counselors, to provide practices that help students create their own success in college and in life.

The book introduces the Integrated Student Success Model, iSuccess, a comprehensive approach to student success based on the latest research in the psychology of well-being and student-centered learning. The book provides specific examples of best practices for professionals working in five critical student success functional areas — academic advising, career services, counseling and psychological services, faculty teaching and student engagement. The authors’ research revealed colleges and universities can do more to develop psychologically healthy and self-aware students as a part of their educational mission.

Elaine Brzycki is an education strategy and planning manager with WPSU Penn State, where she brings to life high-impact projects with cross-unit collaboration, distribution on multiple platforms, student engagement, and public dialogue around timely issues in environment, technology and health. She is the former chair of a cross-unit collaboration committee of the Engagement Leadership Team for Penn State Outreach and Online Education, and served on the Penn State Council on Engaged Scholarship.

Henry Brzycki is a former classroom teacher, counselor, professor, dean and now president of The Brzycki Group, and co-director with Elaine of The Center for the Self in Schools, a not-for-profit initiative whose mission is to positively impact the emotional, psychological and physical well-being of K-16 students. A former lecturer at Penn State, he also earned his doctorate from the Penn State College of Education. He works to empower children, adolescents, and young adults to create happy, healthy, and flourishing lives through their K-16 educational experiences, using positive psychology and psychology of well-being.

Both Elaine and Henry Brzycki help students navigate the transition from adolescence to young adulthood, and credit Penn State for informing their work and abilities to make a difference.
