Engineering professor named American Society of Mechanical Engineers fellow

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Huanyu "Larry" Cheng, a professor of engineering science and mechanics, with affiliations in biomedical, architectural and industrial and manufacturing engineering, has been elected a fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME). He was also recently named a fellow of the Institute of Materials, Minerals & Mining (FIMMM).

According to the notification letter, the honor recognizes exceptional engineering achievements and contributions to the engineering profession and to ASME. Fellowship is one of the society's highest distinctions, with just 3,448 fellows among its 70,255 members. The recognition reflects ASME's commitment to its vision "to be the premier resource for the engineering community globally."

"Larry's election as an ASME Fellow is a fitting recognition of the impact his research has been having on stretchable electronics and biomedical devices over the past decade," said Vincent Meunier, department head of engineering science and mechanics and P.B. Breneman Chair and professor. "His work exemplifies the kind of boundary-crossing engineering we strive for in the Department of Engineering Science and Mechanics, bridging mechanics, materials and device design in ways that translate directly into real-world health monitoring applications. Larry has been a generous mentor and collaborator, and this honor reflects the respect he has earned across the broader mechanical engineering community."

Cheng was recognized for his contributions to mechanical engineering research and innovation, particularly in advanced manufacturing, flexible electronics and multifunctional materials, as well as his leadership within the engineering community.

"This recognition motivates me to continue advancing bio-integrated electronics and intelligent sensing technologies that bridge fundamental research with practical solutions for healthcare and human–machine interfaces," Cheng said. "I also hope it will foster new interdisciplinary collaborations and accelerate the translation of innovative engineering research into technologies that can improve quality of life."
