UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Marek Flaska, assistant professor of nuclear engineering at Penn State, was selected for the Faculty Fellowship Summer Institute in Israel. He will spend two weeks, from May 28 through June 7, traveling to universities and institutes around Israel.
The fellowship is a competitive program that links scholars from diverse disciplines with their Israeli counterparts at major institutions to initiate exchanges and collaborations. Participants meet with Israeli faculty as well as professionals from government, industry, education and media.
“I am very excited about this opportunity. This visit to Israel will give me a chance to meet with Israeli colleagues of my choice from several well-recognized universities and institutes to initiate fruitful and long-term collaboration and networking, while learning about the history, society and culture of Israel,” said Flaska. “I hope to greatly benefit from this fellowship both professionally and personally, and I intend to serve as a messenger of Penn State’s mission and values on this trip.”
Flaska joined Penn State in 2015. His research interest is in the development of new detection methods for accurate identification, characterization and imaging of radiation for applications in nuclear nonproliferation, nuclear safeguards, homeland security, nuclear material control and accountability, nuclear forensics and fundamental physics.
Flaska was the recipient of the Oak Ridge National Laboratory Nuclear Science and Technology Division Appreciation Award in 2006. He received his doctorate in applied physics from the Technical University in Delft, the Netherlands, and his master’s and bachelor’s degrees in nuclear engineering from the Slovak University of Technology in the Slovak Republic.
