Registration now open for Oct. 25 workshop, 'Centering Equity in Assessment'

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Join co-sponsors, the Office of Planning, Assessment, and Institutional Research and the Equity Pedagogy Network, with funding from Schreyer Institute for Teaching Excellence, for an insightful workshop titled, “Centering Equity in Assessment.”

“Centering Equity in Assessment," a free, virtual workshop, will be held from 8 a.m. to noon on Wednesday, Oct. 25, and provide valuable opportunities for the Penn State community to have critical conversations regarding the intersection of equity and assessment in education.

Co-sponsored by the Office of Planning, Assessment, and Institutional Research and the Equity Pedagogy Network,  with funding from Schreyer Institute for Teaching Excellence, the workshop will feature a keynote address from Natasha Jankowski, a higher education and assessment expert and the former executive director of the National Institute for Learning Outcomes Assessment (NILOA). Under her leadership, NILOA received the ACPA – College Student Educators International Contribution to Higher Education award. Jankowski currently serves on the faculty of New England College.

Also included are a panel discussion and breakout discussion sessions focused on program assessment and pedagogy with Equity Pedagogy Network leaders and scholars. Activities are designed to provide participants with emerging practices and critically conscious perspectives for ensuring fairness and inclusivity in assessment processes.

Panel discussion and subsequent breakout discussions will feature work underway at several of the colleges and campuses involved in the Equity Pedagogy Network, with remarks by:

  • Panelist and facilitator Folayemi Wilson, associate dean for access and equity and professor of art with Penn State College of Arts and Architecture
  • Panelist Mary Beth Williams, senior associate dean for science education and professor of chemistry, Eberly College of Science; and facilitator Jackie Bortiatynski, teaching professor and director of the Center for Excellence in Science Education
  • Panelist Victoria Garwood, director of strategic planning and communications, Penn State Greater Allegheny; and Johnathan White, associate teaching professor of history at Greater Allegheny, Street Team member, Penn State – McKeesport Community Center, and co-founder of the Stewart and Jones Scholar Leadership Program
