Graduate School sessions to help students build professional network and skills

Sessions will be focused on how to maximize a student’s graduate experience at Penn State

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Graduate students from any Penn State campus seeking professional development can get tips and advice at two virtual events being hosted by the Graduate School.

The sessions will be held on Sept. 12 at noon and Sept. 21 at 5 p.m., on Zoom. Students can register for the Sept. 12 session here, and the Sept. 21 session here. Students do not need to sign up for both sessions.

Lesley Jackson, associate director of graduate student career and professional development with the Graduate School, will be leading each session, which is focused on how to maximize a student’s graduate experience at Penn State. Topics will include what students can do outside the classroom to explore career options or enhance their resume, how to develop skills that future employers might be interested in, and how to network on a busy graduate student schedule, among other topics.

“I really want to help students explore how to fit in professional development to their degrees and come away with a list of ways to develop news skills or investigate different interests,” Jackson said. “It is important for students to learn how to start developing a professional network before graduation and create genuine professional relationships that can help them as they move forward in their careers.”

The professional development events are part of the Graduate School’s Welcome Month series. Welcome Month throughout August and September will include a variety of events, both virtually and throughout the University Park campus and community, to support graduate students.
