Registration Open for 2023 Penn State Graduate Exhibition

Current graduate students should register online by March 1 for the exhibition

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Registration is now open for the 38th annual Graduate Exhibition, a public showcase of performances, innovative research and visual arts presented by Penn State's graduate students and hosted by the Graduate School. The exhibition will take place March 20-24 and will include musical and theatrical performances, research and design presentations, and art exhibitions.

All Penn State degree-seeking graduate students are eligible to participate in the exhibition. The Graduate Exhibition will return to an in-person format in 2023, while also including a video presentation option.

Registration for all exhibitors must be completed by March 1 at 11:59 p.m. Register at this link.

Each exhibition entry will be judged and scored. Penn State alumni, faculty and the general public are encouraged to register as judges. Awards will be given to those students whose presentations are judged best in each category.

Students can also choose to be considered for two additional awards. New for 2023, a Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Award will recognize any student presenting in any of the five categories whose research or creative endeavor explores issues related to diversity, equity, and inclusion. Students presenting research can also be considered for the Data Visualization award offered in partnership with the University Libraries.

The Graduate Exhibition features five categories showcasing Penn State graduate students’ research and creative accomplishments:

  • The Research Poster Presentation Option allows for posters up to 48”x36” in size in five unique categories — arts and humanities; engineering; health and life sciences; physical sciences and mathematics; and social and behavioral sciences. This option is open to graduate students from all disciplines at the University. Students will present their research via an oral presentation.

  • The Design Option  could include a variety of design products such as a three-dimensional object, a video game, a computer-aided design (CAD), simulations, musical composition or other design object. This option is open to graduate students whose research focuses on the design of a product, whether that be in physical or digital space. Students will present their design projects.

  • The Visual Arts Option is open to graduate students for whom creating studio work is a required part of their graduate degree program. Artwork will be displayed on the exhibition website with a recorded explanation of the genesis of the artwork. The artwork will be on display from March 18 through April 1.

  • The Video Option should be a short presentation (five minutes or less of content, plus up to 30 seconds of acknowledgments) that captures the excitement, importance and value of the student's scholarly work. This option is open to graduate students from all disciplines who wish to present their research in a video format.

  • The Performance Option is open to all graduate students who are pursuing graduate degrees in the performing arts and will be held in person this spring.

Exhibitors in the Visual Arts category will have the opportunity to share their artwork with alumni, the Penn State community and the State College community from March 18 to April 1 in the HUB-Robeson Gallery. The Performance Option will be held in person and judged on Monday, March 20, at 7 p.m. at the Recital Hall at the University Park campus. Poster presentations for the research and design categories will also take place on the University Park campus, at the HUB-Robeson Center on Friday, March 24. Video presentations will also be available online to view from March 20-24.

The Graduate Exhibition celebrates research and creative scholarship, in all its aspects, as an essential and exciting part of graduate education at Penn State. Established in 1986, the exhibition places special emphasis on communicating research and creative endeavor to a general audience and offers unique opportunities for professional development by challenging graduate students to present their work in clear, comprehensible terms to people outside their fields.
