'Ways of Seeing, Ways of Being': Indigenous art, music and stories
5:30 PM - 8:00 PM / October 20, 2026
MALVERN, Pa. — "Ways of Seeing, Ways of Being," presented in partnership with We are the Seeds, is an art exhibit opening celebration (5:30 to 7 p.m. in the Henry Art Gallery) and a community gathering (7 to 8 p.m. in the Musser Auditorium) featuring Indigenous storytelling, regalia, beadwork, historical ephemera, photography and flute music.
The art exhibit features the work of four Indigenous artists and curators who explore how memory, storytelling, and perception shape our understanding of ourselves, others, and the world around us. Through wearable arts, a historical postcard collection, and a photography dialogue between mother and son, the exhibition offers a layered narrative of Indigenous presence in the Philadelphia region, rooted in cultural continuity, family, and intergenerational knowledge.
The community gathering will feature a presentation by Joy Tonepahhote, in which she will share the meaning behind her beadwork, the significance of regalia, and the music, dances, and stories carried through these art forms.
Next, the program will focus on the magic of storytelling with Tchin, who brings audiences into the world of Indigenous story through his signature blend of humor and historical and cultural knowledge. He will share narratives that illuminate the values, teachings and lived experiences of Native peoples. The program will feature the Native Courting Flute.
This event is free and open to the public, but pre-registration is required. Register for "Ways of Seeing, Ways of Being."
