Penn State McKeesport will host the exhibit "African-American Life in Pittsburgh" from the photographic archives of The New Pittsburgh Courier in the Frable Conference Center on the campus. The exhibit is a collection of 30 photographs from the newspaper's archives and will be open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily in the Frable Conference Center, Room 117 from Oct. 16 through 20. The photographs depict scenes of everyday American life, including those of African-American life in Pittsburgh.
On the opening evening of the event, at 7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 16, John Brewer, curator of the exhibit, will be discussing the photographs and giving some insight on the exhibit.
The Pittsburgh Courier is one of the oldest black newspapers in the United States, with a rich and storied history. Established in 1907 by Edwin Harleston, a guard at the H.J. Heinz food packing plant, The Pittsburgh Courier gained national prominence after attorney Robert Lee Vann became the newspaper's editor and publisher in 1910.
