Charity basketball game at Greater Allegheny raised over $13,000 for scholarship

MCKEESPORT, Pa. – On Saturday, Jan 12, Penn State Greater Allegheny teamed up with the Pittsburgh Metropolitan Area Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (PMAHCC) to co-host the first annual charity basketball game and raise funds to support PMAHCC’s scholarships for Pittsburgh’s Hispanic community.

The event drew a crowd of 250 people and raised a total of $13,500 that will be split between Greater Allegheny and PMAHCC.

“I want to thank the Pittsburgh Metropolitan Area Hispanic Chamber of Commerce for teaming up with us for this event and to all the players who gave their time and energy to the game,” said Jacqueline Edmondson, chancellor and chief academic officer at Greater Allegheny.  “I was pleased to see so many people join us yesterday, as we work to raise funds that provide scholarships for students.”

The game featured Joey Cora (third base coach for the Pittsburgh Pirates), Frank Coonelly (president of the Pittsburgh Pirates), Scoot Warrick (Harlem Wizards), Omar Moreno (former Pittsburgh Pirate and 1979 World Series champion), Roberto Clemente Jr., members of the Steel City Yellow Jackets, and many more.

“I am grateful for the commitment from all the fans, players, coaches, planning committee, volunteers and sponsors,” said Jesús Torres, treasurer for PMAHCC. “This would have not possible without everyone’s hard work and dedication.”

A special thank you to the sponsors of the event.
