MIDDLETOWN, Pa. — Penn State Harrisburg’s Center for Holocaust and Jewish Studies will welcome historian Julie Keresztes for a discussion on "Nazi photography and the Holocaust" at noon on Friday, Jan. 27, via webinar (Register here). Jan. 27 is International Holocaust Remembrance Day — the day Auschwitz was liberated by Soviet forces.
About the webinar: Photographs from Nazi concentration camps are usually thought of as the photos taken by Allied soldiers as they liberated Eastern Europe. But long before they arrived, the Nazis kept their own photographic records of the camp system. This talk explores some of the most common forms of photography practiced in the camps and highlights the role of camp prisoners in using photography for survival and resistance.
Keresztes is a historian of modern Germany who specializes in the Third Reich and the Holocaust. She is the 2022-24 American University and Jack, Joseph, and Morton Mandel Center for Advanced Holocaust Studies Postdoctoral Fellow. She previously taught at Tufts University from 2020 to 2022. Keresztes received her doctorate with distinction in history from Boston University and is the recipient of fellowships and grants from the German Historical Institute, the Leo Baeck Institute, the American Academy for Jewish Research, and the Central European History Society. She is currently finishing a book manuscript on photography in Nazi Germany, and is working on a critical biography of Heinrich Hoffmann, Adolf Hitler’s personal photographer.
The event is free and open to the public and is sponsored by the Center for Holocaust and Jewish Studies in collaboration with the Mandel Center of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, Washington, D.C.
