MIDDLETOWN, Pa. — Jessica Barb, from Elizabethtown, Pennsylvania, will receive her bachelor’s degree in communications, with a minor in military studies during Penn State Harrisburg’s spring 2026 commencement ceremony. Here, she shares her journey through higher education:

“One of the most impactful aspects of my time at Penn State Harrisburg was the abundance of opportunities available. I wanted my college experience to be challenging, where I could learn new things in and out of the classroom. I also wanted to grow as a person, both personally and professionally. Penn State Harrisburg allowed me to do so.

“During my time in college, I became a writer and photographer for the Blue and White Journal Newspaper. I highlighted students’ clubs, sports teams, and organizations that would help inform others about what was available to them. I joined MiniTHON, Lion Ambassadors, and the National Society for Leadership and Success. I also worked part-time in Career Services. This allowed me to support my peers in crafting their resumes to build their own future and find interests that reflected their potential. At the same time, I was a cadet with the Blue Mountain Battalion Army ROTC program. As prior enlisted with the Pennsylvania Army National Guard, I also held several leadership positions in the ROTC program. These roles taught me discipline, perseverance, and accountability during my career as a cadet in training to become an Army officer.

“The one thing I learned through balancing all of this was how to be resilient. That same determination allowed me to complete my degree in three and a half years.

“I chose to study communications at Penn State Harrisburg because of my love for photography and writing. I found purpose in sharing stories of others and showing that every one of us has a life worth capturing. I enjoyed helping others tell their own journeys, whether that was written, photographed, or even through their resumes and life experiences. Communication is the key that turns meaningful ideas into impactful realities.

“As I look ahead, I am excited to bring together my passion for communication with my commitment to service. My experiences in journalism and taking photos have shown me the power of storytelling in connecting people and giving meaning to everyday moments. In the military, I hope to use those same skills to highlight the duties of soldiers and share their dedication and sacrifice. This path I chose allows me to continue doing what I love, while being part of something greater than myself.

“After graduation, I will attend the Basic Officer Leadership Course to become a Public Affairs Officer with the Pennsylvania Army National Guard.”
