HAZLETON, Pa. — A transformative $950,000 gift to Penn State Hazleton will allow academically qualified, high school students in the nearby community to take courses at the campus free of charge — earning college credits and gaining early exposure to college-level academics.
“I want to help students in the Hazleton Area School District pursue a college degree while they are in high school through dual enrollment,” the donor said. “The students will have access to all the University resources, including tutoring, academic advising, the library and computer facilities. I encourage students in the Hazleton Area School District to take advantage of this opportunity.”
Through the dual enrollment program, high school juniors and seniors who meet academic qualifications will be able to enroll in select courses offered on campus. These courses are designed to introduce students to college-level coursework in a supportive academic environment. Students will also receive academic coaching focused on study skills, note-taking and exam preparation — tools essential for college success. The donor’s gift will cover tuition and associated costs.
“We are profoundly grateful for the generosity and foresight of our donor,” said Durell Johnson, interim regional chancellor of Penn State Hazleton, Scranton and Wilkes-Barre. “This gift will provide countless high school students with the opportunity to prepare academically for their first year of college and expand on the skills needed to be successful. It also supports access and affordability — core elements of Penn State’s land-grant mission.”
Aaron Mattern, regional senior director of enrollment management, added, “The impact of philanthropy on programs like dual enrollment cannot be overstated. It removes financial barriers and helps reduce anticipated student loan debt, making college more accessible for students and families.”
“We are thrilled to partner with Penn State Hazleton on this incredible opportunity for our students,” said Hazleton Area School District Superintendent Brian Uplinger. “Providing access to free college courses empowers our students to challenge themselves academically, explore future career paths and build confidence in their ability to succeed in higher education.”
During the spring 2026 semester, students will begin taking dual enrollment classes on campus at Penn State Hazleton. Planning is underway to expand the program in fall 2026, offering a broader range of subjects — including those not typically available in high school — and opportunities to explore potential majors and careers.
Support for this initiative advances the University’s historic land-grant mission to serve and lead. Through philanthropy, alumni and friends are helping students to join the Penn State family and prepare for lifelong success; driving research, outreach and economic development that grow our shared strength and readiness for the future; and increasing the University’s impact for families, patients and communities across the commonwealth and around the world.
