HAZLETON, Pa. — Penn State Hazleton’s Lectures and Cultural Events committee will feature Douglas Edmonds, assistant professor of physics at Penn State Hazleton, as guest speaker for the campus’ annual George Tseo Memorial Lecture at 6:15 p.m. on Tuesday, April 18, in Room 115 of the Evelyn Graham Academic Building.

Edmonds’ lecture, “The Physics and Philosophy of Time Travel,” will take a deep dive into the physics and philosophy of time travel and the interplay between the two approaches, Edmonds said.

“From a fundamental physics perspective, time travel appears to be possible, at least in principle. In fact, traveling into the future is not only possible, but experimentally verifiable,” he said. “However, travel into the past is trickier physically and raises philosophical objections. Our current understanding of the physical possibility of time travel has lent a sense of urgency to the philosophical pursuit of understanding the nature of time.”

The lecture is held annually in memory of Tseo, a professor of Earth sciences at Penn State Hazleton from 1988 until his death from cancer in 2005. The series honors his memory and diverse interests by featuring speakers with backgrounds in science, history, art, music and many other fields.
