Reality TV stars to speak about healthy cooking at Penn State Hazleton

HAZLETON, Pa. — Reality TV stars Abel James and Alyson Rose will visit Penn State Hazleton on Thursday, April 21, for a day of interacting with students and the public.

The pair promote healthy living through fitness and healthy meals featured in their cookbooks. James stars as a celebrity coach on ABC television’s “My Diet is Better than Yours” and is a No. 1 best-selling author, top 10 app developer, musician, radio show host, entrepreneur and health crusader. His work has been featured in WIRED magazine, Paleo Living and hundreds of media outlets in business, technology, psychology and health. Within its first year, his Web series "Fat-Burning Man" rose to the No. 1 most popular health podcast in the United States and United Kingdom and went on to top the charts in more than seven countries across the world for the past two years. He and his team developed Caveman Feast, the top app in food and drink across the world and No. 6 app overall in the Apple Store in 2013. After completing his bachelor’s degree at Dartmouth College a year early, James created his own interdisciplinary curriculum to study brain science, music and technology, graduating as a senior fellow with honors. He later independently published his research in “The Musical Brain,” which became a No. 1 Amazon best-seller.

James will hold a book signing of his New York Times best-selling cookbook “The Wild Diet” at the campus bookstore at 6 p.m. and a public presentation at 7 p.m. in the Dr. Thomas M. Caccese Gymnasium in the Physical Education Building. The events are free and open to the public.

Rose is a producer, former professional gamer, reality TV star and aspiring cook. Her best-selling app, Gluten-Free Desserts, beat out The Food Network to top the iTunes food and drink charts on Thanksgiving 2013, and her recipes are featured in “The Wild Diet.” As a professional gamer, she and her teammates were the first all-female team to take first place at a professional video game tournament. She placed in the top bracket in seven different titles.

Rose helped launch "The Old Republic," a massive multiplayer online game set in the "Star Wars" universe that is recognized as the largest entertainment voiceover project in history. She was the marketing director on “The Two Bobs,” a comedy directed by Tim McCanlies, and starred on "WCG Ultimate Gamer," a video game-based reality television series that aired on the Syfy network.

James and Rose will speak to Instructor in Microbiology Tammy Brill’s microbiology class. Rose will give a lunch and learn presentation on “How to Cook with Real Food” to a group of students, and all campus students will have an opportunity to talk with James and Rose during a meet-and-greet event.

The presentations are part of ongoing healthy living initiatives at Penn State Hazleton, with the goal of improving and maintaining health and wellness for the campus community.

Sponsors for James and Rose’s visit to Penn State Hazleton are the campus honors program, the Commission for Women at Penn State Hazleton, the Penn State Hazleton library and Monica Brill in memory of Thomas Brill.
