HERSHEY, Pa. — Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center recently received the 2016 Health Professions Higher Education Excellence in Diversity (HEED) Award from INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine, the oldest and largest diversity-focused publication in higher education. This national honor recognizes U.S. medical, dental, pharmacy, osteopathic, nursing and allied health schools that demonstrate an outstanding commitment to diversity and inclusion. The Medical Center will be featured, along with 30 other recipients, in the December 2016 issue.
“The Medical Center and College of Medicine are committed to increasing the diversity of our learner population and workforce and creating a more inclusive culture of respect for our learners, faculty, staff, and patients,” said Lynette Chappell-Williams, chief diversity officer and associate dean of diversity and inclusion. “The HEED award provides an opportunity for us to assess our diversity and inclusive initiatives as part of our diversity imperative plan and to evaluate our diversity and inclusion practices against those of our peers. HEED’s holistic approach to diversity aligns well with the comprehensive nature of our diversity imperative. Receiving the 2016 HEED Award for Health Professions is an extreme honor and validates the efforts we are making to advance our commitment to diversity and inclusion.”
The HEED Award is open to all colleges and universities across the United States and measures an institution’s level of achievement and intensity of commitment to broadening diversity and inclusion on campus through initiatives, programs, and outreach; student recruitment, retention and completion; and hiring practices for faculty and staff.
