UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Penn State Human Resources’ Talent Management team will be rolling out their new leadership and management program, "Leadership Foundations: A Blueprint for Success," beginning this fall.

The program is designed to offer learning and development resources for leaders and managers in all stages of their career. Leadership Foundations includes four (4) learning tracks: Leadership Essentials, Emerging Leaders, Management Concepts, and Leadership Excellence.

According to Christy Helms, senior director for Human Resources Talent Management, “This program has been designed with three guiding principles: The content should be relevant to individuals with different levels of experience, working in different sectors, and leading different types of people; learning opportunities should be available regardless of geographic location or work schedule; and the content should be available in real time when the learner needs it.”

Leadership Essentials

Leadership Essentials is designed to provide introductory information on topics and processes important for all new managers at Penn State, including individuals with prior manager experience but new to the University.

The Leadership Essentials curriculum is automatically assigned to anyone hired to or transferred into a manager position. New managers will receive an email informing them the program has been assigned with instructions for accessing the program. Alternatively, anyone with the manager role may access the curriculum from the Learning Resources Network (LRN) through the Resources tab on the menu bar or by typing "Leadership Essentials" in the search bar.

Emerging Leaders

Now accepting expressions of interest, the Penn State Emerging Leaders (PSEL) program will begin in February 2023, and is intended for individuals interested in developing their leadership skills.

This program is offered twice annually:

  • Winter: February-April
  • Summer: June-August

All instructor-led seminars are delivered virtually so there is no need to travel.  We are asking that expressions of interest for Winter 2023 be submitted by Friday, Dec. 23, however, individuals who aren’t accepted or apply after this date will be added to a waitlist for the next offering.

Management Concepts

Launching in Fall 2023, this program is designed for individuals already in a manager role, both those new to management, as well as experienced managers interested in refreshing their skills.

The program is organized into three sections, with multiple courses in each section:

  1. Managing Self: the development of attributes important to leadership
  2. Managing the Team: development of important people management skills
  3. Managing the Work: focus on skills needed to effectively direct the work of the team

Leadership Excellence

The Leadership Excellence program will offer leaders and managers at Penn State the opportunity to participate in “deep-dive” sessions on a range of important leadership topics. These courses will be available as single sessions rather than part of a multi-session series. This program is slated to launch in Winter 2024.
