Thanksgiving break expanded to include Nov. 22 for full-time employees

Employees receive additional day off this year as a ‘thank you’ for going above and beyond

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – As a thank you, and in appreciation for the continued and significant contributions of so many in the Penn State community, University leaders have approved an expansion of Thanksgiving break this year for full-time employees. The break will now include Wednesday, Nov. 22, and will continue through Friday, Nov. 24.

“On behalf of the University’s entire leadership team, I want to thank our hard-working faculty and staff for their commitment – for going above and beyond every day,” said Penn State President Neeli Bendapudi. “We wish our employees a well-deserved break with their families and friends this Thanksgiving. In this season, and all seasons, I am grateful to our faculty and staff for their tireless efforts on behalf of our students and our public mission.”

To accommodate this change, University offices and operations, except for essential services and operations, will close for Thanksgiving break at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 21. The remainder of that day through 11:59 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 22, will be considered a closedown day.  University offices and operations will resume at normal starting times on Monday, Nov. 27. This extension will apply only to the November 2023 Thanksgiving break.

Employees who are required to work on Nov. 22 will receive compensatory time for hours worked, for use at a different time, in accordance with Human Resource Guideline 10, or, if they are union represented, their collective bargaining agreements. This day will need to be recorded in Workday. For instructions on how to enter this time, please refer to the Official Campus Closure Job Aid.
