Four Penn State Abington student organizations launched a donation drive this week to support victims of Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico.

Marianella Romero, a liberal arts major and an organizer of the benefit, is one of many students who have family on the devastated island.

“We all have a responsibility to each other as one people of the same earth. We have brothers and sisters suffering at the hands of something out of their control,” she said. “Let’s stand together with the people of Puerto Rico and do everything we can to give these individuals and families something we would all hope to receive in a time like this — love.”

The “It’s Time For Action” drive is sponsored by Sister2Sister, Abington Athletics, Abington Christian Fellowship, and the Latino Student Organization.

  • When: Oct. 2 to 19.
  • Where: Collection boxes are located in the lobbies of Lions Gate, Lares, Woodland, Sutherland, and the Athletics Center.
  • What: Granola and protein bars, crackers, dried fruit, cereal, flashlights, batteries, first-aid items or kits, diapers, female sanitary products, cleaning products and bug repellent.

The students are also collecting monetary donations to purchase items and support the flood victims in Florida and Houston. To donate to Puerto Rico relief, contact Tina Vance-Knight. To donate to the general Hurricane Relief Fund for Houston and Texas, contact Tracy Reed.

Penn State Abington, formerly the Ogontz campus, offers baccalaureate degrees in 19 majors at its suburban location just north of Philadelphia. Nearly half of our 4,000 students complete all four years at Abington, with opportunities in undergraduate research, the Schreyer honors program, NCAA Division III athletics, and more. Students can start the first two years of more than 160 Penn State majors at Abington and complete their degrees at University Park or another campus.
