UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — The Global Safety Office within Penn State Global Programs will host Bina Surati on Thursday, March 28, for a presentation and discussion titled “Social Media Disinformation and Implications for International Travelers.” The presentation will take place from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. in Room 232 AB of the HUB-Robeson Center and is open to all interested students, faculty and staff.
Surati has worked for the U.S. Department of State's Overseas Security Advisory Council (OSAC) in the Bureau of Diplomatic Security as a south and central Asia analyst since February 2015. In this position, Surati is responsible for providing unclassified security information to the private sector to aid in decision-making about potential threats to personnel, operations and facilities.
Surati’s work in OSAC includes collaboration with various U.S. government officials to create analytical papers and presentations that cover threats from crime and political violence, as well as tactics and trends in terrorism. She also has used her expertise to teach the theory of terrorism to eastern and central European law enforcement professionals at the International Law Enforcement Agency in Budapest, Hungary.
Before her time with OSAC, Surati worked for the U.S. Chamber of Commerce as a senior manager for the information technology and media and entertainment portfolio in the U.S.-India Business Council. She also has worked on the India team at McLarty Associates as well as the Atlantic Council.
Surati received her bachelor of arts in history from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a master of arts in security studies from Georgetown University’s Walsh School of Forensic Service.
