"Her family knew that if they killed her, there's almost no chance they would be punished. There are only a few cases of honor killings where people have gone to jail. The law in Afghanistan actually gives them the right to kill a woman for talking to a man outside of their family."

— Rod Nordland, author of "The Lovers: Afghanistan's Romeo and Juliet, the True Story of How They Defied Their Families and Escaped an Honor Killing"

Nordland writes for The New York Times as its international correspondent at large and bureau chief in Kabul, Afghanistan. The Pulitzer Prize winner attended Penn State Abington and graduated from Penn State in 1972 with a degree in journalism. Read more about his new book here.
