"I was born in 1976. I am 43 years old and you are looking at a woman who is part of the first generation of black Americans who was born with full citizenship rights. It's important to remember we aren't talking about ancient history. Ten years before I was born, it was legal to deny somebody like me housing simply because I descended from slaves. Eight years before I was born, it was illegal for me to exist because my mother is white and my father is black, and that was illegal."

Nikole Hannah-Jones, an award-winning investigative reporter for The New York Times Magazine whose work focuses on civil rights and racial injustices, served as the keynote speaker at "Brown@65: National Symposium for the 65th Anniversary of Brown v. Board of Education," held Friday, May 10, at the Nittany Lion Inn on Penn State's University Park campus. The event was sponsored by the Center for Education and Civil Rights and the Africana Research Center at Penn State.
