MIDDLETOWN, Pa. – Penn State Harrisburg presented a virtual panel titled ‘Racial Health Disparities in the Age of COVID-19’ on Feb. 17. The discussion brought together panelists from across Penn State, government, and the medical field to discuss their research and professional experiences related to racial health disparities.
The event highlighted the experiences of Black/African Americans and how racial disparities in health may have been exacerbated during the pandemic.
Opening remarks were provided by college Chancellor John M. Mason Jr.
Panelists included:
- Sheldon D. Fields, associate dean for equity and inclusion in Penn State's College of Nursing; first vice president of the National Black Nurses Association
- Raffy R. Luquis, associate professor in Penn State Harrisburg’s School of Behavioral Sciences and Education
- David Saunders, director of the Office of Health Equity at Pennsylvania Department of Health
- Johanna Vidal-Phelan, senior medical director in Pediatrics at UPMC
- Sheetal J. Gade, certified registered nurse practitioner at the Penn State Health Lime Spring Walk-In-Clinic
