Penn State Greater Allegheny to reopen Free Store 15132 on Oct. 20

MCKEESPORT, Pa. — Penn State Greater Allegheny will reopen its Free Store 15132 with special hours, noon–2 p.m. and 5–7 p.m., on Wednesday Oct. 20. The Free Store is located on the lower level of the campus’ Frable Building, on 4000 University Drive in McKeesport.

“We’re excited to see the return of Free Store 15132,” said Zack Rosen, public relations specialist at Greater Allegheny. “It is a staple for our campus and local community, providing slightly used goods to those with a need.”

Rosemary Martinelli, chair of faculty senate and lecturer in business and communications at Greater Allegheny, recognized how the Free Store 15132 benefits her students in their academic and professional journeys.

“The Penn State Greater Allegheny Free Store [15132] has helped my students with career clothing and accessories that give them the confidence to speak in front of groups of diverse audiences,” said Martinelli. “Some classroom experiences don't — and can't — come out of a textbook. Real-life learning takes all shapes and forms and, sometimes, students need to take on the role of the professionals they aspire to be.”

The Free Store 15132 will begin accepting slightly used items, in good condition and free from stains, rips, or tears. Items accepted are women and men’s clothing and accessories (shoes, belts, hats, scarfs, etc.), baby and children’s clothing (bibs, onesies, shoes, hats, gloves, etc.), and small household items (books, toys, other miscellaneous items.)

Free Store 15132 will begin regular operation on Thursday, Oct. 21. According to Louise Aravich, residence life and student engagement coordinator, members of the Student Government Association (SGA) will volunteer in the store. Aravich acknowledged the work of SGA Vice-President Elijah Akinade for engaging his fellow association members in the store’s management. Fall hours are: Tuesdays, 5–7 p.m.; Thursdays, 12:15–1:15 p.m. and 5–7 p.m.; and Fridays, 12:15–1:15 p.m.

The Free Store 15132 was originally opened in 2017 as part of Penn State Greater Allegheny’s Sustainability Signature Program. Available items may have ended up in landfills, but now have a new purpose for those with a need.
