Penn State’s Libraries tapped as a social media friendly library

In a recent survey, Penn State’s University Libraries ranked 16th among other academic libraries. The “100 Most Social Media Friendly College and University Libraries for 2013” is a survey by LibraryScienceList, a new social community for librarians worldwide. It measured Penn State’s Libraries use of Facebook, Twitter, You Tube, Google Plus and Flickr to interest student in the Libraries’ collections and services.

The staff at LibraryScienceList.com searched the most popular social media platforms looking for libraries that actively use their accounts to promote library events, notify students of new materials, or interact with patrons in other ways. They listed 442 college and university libraries to evaluate, based on the level of activity on various platforms. The highest possible score was 100, with 32 points for Facebook, 25 for Twitter, 18 for YouTube, seven for Pinterest, four for Google Plus, and 14 for Flickr. Penn State scored 83.2; the University of Texas at Austin ranked first with a score of 94.7.
