UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Penn State seniors received a lesson on the importance of having health insurance from a panel of experts during an event on Thursday, Oct. 22, at the HUB-Robeson Center.
Insurance Commissioner Teresa Miller, University Health Services Director Dr. Robin Oliver and Student Body President Emily McDonald, talked to a gathering of seniors about why they should learn about the health insurance options available to them.
The Affordable Care Act requires everyone to obtain health insurance, and most students have never had to be responsible for their own. To help them navigate this system, all graduating seniors will receive a letter from the Insurance Commissioner explaining the importance of health insurance, the options under the Affordable Care Act and the help available for learning more about insurance.
“I encourage all Penn State Students, and all college students, to take a little time and read this letter,” said Miller. “Even if you are still some months or even years away from making this decision, start thinking about this and exploring the plans now.”
McDonald said that she and her fellow Penn State students are the next generation of leaders. “As we move into the next phase of our lives, it’s important to make our health and insurance a priority,” she noted
Open enrollment for health insurance starts Nov. 1 and lasts through Jan. 31, 2016. You can also learn more about open enrollment and other health insurance topics on the state insurance department website.
