University announces ‘All In’ achievement award, nominations being accepted

Award will recognize person who embodies commitment to diversity and inclusion

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Do you know someone who embodies Penn State’s commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion? Consider nominating that person for the “All In” at Penn State Achievement Award that will recognize a student, faculty or staff member for demonstrating leadership and inspiring others.

“All In at Penn State: An Achievement Award for Commitment to Diversity and Inclusion” will honor a member of the University community who helps Penn State achieve its mission of being a leader in research, learning and engagement by embracing diversity and affecting the world in positive and enduring ways. The recipient will be someone who goes above and beyond what is required of him or her as a student, faculty member or staff member, through their accomplishments, leadership or innovative approach.

Vice Provost for Educational Equity Marcus Whitehurst said members of the community are encouraged to nominate individuals they’ve seen making an impact, whether it’s in the classroom, on campus or in the community.

The “All In” award pays homage to Penn State’s 1946-47 football teams, which, when faced with segregation demands from southern colleges, refused to play without their black players, Wally Triplett and Dennie Hoggard.

Nominations will be accepted until March 13 for any full-time student or member of faculty or staff across the University. Recipients of the award will receive a $1,500 stipend.

“The goal of the ‘All In’ at Penn State Achievement Award is to recognize the exemplary service to equity by a Penn State faculty or staff member, or student who has consistently worked toward creating a safe and open-minded environment that is respectful of everyone regardless of their background,” Whitehurst said. “At the same, we want to continue to raise awareness about the importance of diversity and inclusion on our campuses.”

Criteria:

The recipient of the award will have made a contribution to Penn State’s diversity, equity and inclusion mission by demonstrating exceptional accomplishment, leadership or innovation, which may include:

  • Creating an inclusive climate – creating respect and inclusion among various communities;
  • Transforming education – modeling, teaching and/or training to address the requirements of a diverse and pluralistic democracy;
  • Expanding authentic access – expanding usage, outreach and/or access (e.g., to Penn State facilities, programs, resources and services) with attention to inclusion;
  • Advancing diverse communities – advancing diverse student and workforce representation through improved recruitment and retention practices.

Nominations should be 500 words or less and provide specific examples of the nominee’s exceptional performance in one (or more) of the areas mentioned above. Recipients will be honored at the Multicultural Resource Center’s annual senior awards and faculty/staff diversity recognition reception in April.

Submit nominations with the name, campus address and phone number, email address, and unit of the nominee no later than March 13, 2017, to Eileen Williams in the Office of the Vice Provost for Educational Equity, by email (emj1@psu.edu) or by mailing or dropping them off, 313 Old Main, University Park, PA 16802. Anonymous nominations will be accepted.
