Linux Cluster to be retired Jan. 5

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — As part of its efforts to further the University’s goal to “Transform Internal Operations” through evaluating outdated systems and making work easier, Penn State IT will retire the Linux Cluster system on Jan. 5, 2024. The Linux Cluster is a connected array of Linux computers that began as a side project but became a service.

Penn State IT conducted a thorough evaluation of usage, and the data showed few unique users and few logins in recent years. Faculty members with frequent usage have already been identified, contacted and provided options for their individual needs. However, the evaluation also found no specific teaching needs that require Linux Cluster. This finding, along with the outdated nature of the system and accompanying support for it, contributed to the decision to retire the service.

Those with questions regarding the Linux Cluster retirement can contact the IT Service Desk via chat, phone or email.
