UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — After serving as the University’s on-premises storage solution for several decades, Penn State IT will retire the Penn State Account Storage Space (PASS) as of July 28, 2023.
Every student, faculty and staff member was allocated storage and file-sharing space in PASS when their Penn State user ID was created. You may have used PASS to store and share important personal or web files. Or you may have used PASS to save files from a computer lab with or without knowing it. Students, faculty and staff should review their personal PASS space and transfer any files to alternative platforms before the retirement date. Instructions on how to do so, along with recommended alternatives, are available on the Prepare for the PASS Retirement SharePoint site.
"OneDrive, Google Sites and Workspace, Microsoft 365 Delve, SharePoint and sites.psu.edu are excellent storage and collaboration applications," Vice President for Information Technology and Chief Operating Officer Jen Stedelin said. "Each option is available at no additional charge to students, faculty and staff and can be used as an alternative to PASS."
Several factors contributed to the decision to retire the storage service, including aging hardware, rising maintenance costs, and the availability of other storage and collaboration platforms and applications that can be used as an alternative to PASS.
For assistance with reviewing and transferring files from PASS, contact the IT Service Desk via chat, phone or email. For the full list of alternate solutions, see PASS alternatives.
