UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — To simplify user experiences and enhance the security of University resources, Penn State IT has announced the mobile id+ card as Penn State’s primary credential.

The mobile id+ card supports Penn State’s digital campus initiative by allowing students, faculty and staff to access campus facilities via their iPhone, Apple Watch or Android device. For more information, read Penn State launches new mobile id+ card

While most of the University’s Housing and Food Services buildings have been upgraded to contactless tap technology, this project will continue to replace physical id+ cards for building access and services by promoting mobile-first technologies in a phased approach.

New electronic doors and card access readers are currently being installed in the administrative and academic buildings at Penn State's Beaver, Behrend, Greater Allegheny, Harrisburg and Mont Alto campuses. These five campuses will be the first to go mobile-first in the summer of 2024.

The next phase will continue to replace magnetic stripe readers and implement mobile-first technology at the remaining campus locations. All residence halls, administrative facilities and academic buildings at every Penn State campus will be compatible with the mobile id+ card by the summer of 2025.

The Office of Physical Security will notify access and facility coordinators ahead of a facility upgrade. Once the new card access readers have been upgraded at each campus, physical id+ cards will be issued only by exception.*
