Penn State retires WebApps for WebLabs to optimize remote teaching and learning

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — As part of Penn State IT’s efforts to improve the University’s virtualized application environments, WebApps has retired as of May 8 and will automatically redirect users to WebLabs.

While WebApps was designed to be an extension of the computer lab experience, it is a single software application that has expensive licensing and complex system requirements.

In comparison, WebLabs offers a full desktop lab experience and contains all the same applications as WebApps, plus many more. To reduce the redundancy of tools and offer students a more consistent lab experience, WebApps was retired earlier this year and replaced with WebLabs.

Now, remote access to teaching and learning applications will all be in one place. Users will also be able to interact with other applications like Microsoft Office products and cloud storage locations rather than only using one application at a time.

WebLabs is intended as a way for students to perform specialized coursework from a personal device and is restricted to use by students and instructors with an affiliation to a Penn State campus or World Campus.

The use of WebLabs by staff and researchers is not supported. Staff members interested in specific uses should contact their department’s local IT team for alternative solutions.
