University to retire Penn State WikiSpaces in December 2022

Content creators are encouraged to move their content to alternative platforms now

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — The University will retire Penn State WikiSpaces, the self-service wiki/web platform for creating and editing content, on Dec. 16.

Several factors contributed to the decision to retire the service, including the increase in the cost of the contract and costly required upgrades to the platform, as well as the availability of other collaboration platforms and applications that can be used as an alternative to WikiSpaces.

"SharePoint, OneDrive, Google Workspace, Sites at Penn State and Canvas are excellent storage, collaboration and learning management tools already included in our existing contracts," Interim Vice President for Information Technology and Chief Information Officer Michael Büsges said. "Each of these options is available without additional charge to students, faculty and staff."

Content creators are now encouraged to delete spaces no longer needed and/or export their current content to alternative formats. Faculty and instructional designers should create courses in another platform or move any course materials currently on Penn State WikiSpaces directly to Canvas.
