UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Penn State’s Center for Global Studies and Humanities Institute are offering Global Humanities Research Impact Grants of up to $5,000 to support international travel by Penn State scholars conducting advanced global humanities research.

While both units have previously offered complementary support for faculty engaged in global humanities research, this is the first formal collaboration between the two, both of which are housed in the College of the Liberal Arts.

“The motive to offer these new awards was clear – a truly global research agenda requires significant funds for international travel,” noted Sophia A. McClennen, director of the Center for Global Studies and professor of international affairs and comparative literature. She says that the goal of these grants is to support the particular needs of humanities faculty, whose work depends on access to sources, archives, materials, and colleagues in complex global settings.

“We are pleased to partner with the Center for Global Studies to promote important humanities research with a global reach,” added John Christman, Humanities Institute director and professor of philosophy, political science, and women’s studies.

Global Humanities Research Impact Grants give faculty greater flexibility in designing projects that could potentially have a significant impact in their respective fields. These “middle-stage” awards also fill a significant gap for faculty who can often get start-up travel resources or late stage support for substantial projects but struggle to find support for international research travel that advances their work.

Grant applications are due Sept. 9, and awardees are expected to be notified by Oct. 1. Grants will be awarded for the academic year (thereby allowing faculty to determine when to travel for their work) and will be allocated through travel reimbursements subject to Penn State unit protocols and procedures.

Application requirements and additional information can be obtained by visiting the Global Humanities Research Impact Grants web page or emailing cgs.psu@gmail.com.
