Penn State Hershey’s Director of Facilities Terry Achey will retire at the end of December after 13 years in that role and 34 years with Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center and Penn State College of Medicine. Marvin Smith, a 27-year U.S. Air Force veteran and civil engineer, will replace Achey as facilities director, effective Jan. 2.
In his most recent role as director of installations for Air Forces Central Command, Smith led a professional staff of 40 engineers, project managers and contracting officers in facilities and infrastructure strategic planning, budgeting and operations at nine major bases. In addition to the construction, maintenance and operation of airfields at these installations, his role included overall management and planning for utility systems, dining facilities, dormitories, gymnasiums and other recreational facilities, administrative buildings, maintenance and operational facilities.
As director of facilities at Penn State Hershey, Smith will oversee a 146-person staff responsible for the maintenance of a 4.5 million-square-foot campus, as well as duties related to Building Operations, Waste Processing, Buildings and Grounds, Planning and Construction, and Safety.
Achey’s service to Penn State Hershey culminates in the opening in January of the new Penn State Hershey Children’s Hospital building, the final project of a 10-year master facilities plan that he developed and directed.
