Campus offers adult personal enrichment classes

Penn State Mont Alto Continuing Education will offer the following personal enrichment classes this winter/spring.

-- "Conversational Spanish": Courses will be offered for both beginners and intermediate students. The beginner course will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesdays, Jan. 23 through April 17, in the Franklin County Career and Technology Center. The intermediate class will held from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursdays, Jan. 25 through March 29, in the Franklin County Career and Technology Center. The beginner class costs $150 and the intermediate class costs $120.

-- "Invest in Your Debt": This three-hour seminar will help students pay off credit card and car payment debt in one to three years and pay off a 30-year mortgage in another three to four years, saving thousands in interest payments. The class will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, April 18, in the Franklin County Career and Technology Center.

-- "Spend Smart": This course will help students to find an extra $100 to $400 monthly to help pay off debt or start a savings account. The class will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. Monday, April 23, in the Franklin County Career and Technology Center. The cost is $49.

-- "Cake Decorating": Learn to decorate cakes from the Wilton Cake Decorating Course. The class will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursdays, Jan. 25 through Feb. 15 , in the Franklin County Career and Technology Center. The cost is $90.

-- "Basic Crochet": Learn the basics of crocheting including chain, single, double, increase and decrease styles. Bring to class one skein of 100 percent acrylic or blended yarn or any smooth yarn, and crochet hook F or G. The class will be held from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 22 and 29, in the Franklin County Career and Technology Center. The cost is $30.

-- "Quilting for Beginners": This class is designed for individuals who are interested in learning to quilt. Individual projects are encouraged so that the student may work with teacher assistance. Bring a sewing machine or bring supplies to sew pieces by hand. Class will run from 6 to 9 p.m. Mondays, Feb. 5 through March 19, in the Franklin County Career and Technology Center. The cost is $75.

-- "Swing Dancing for Beginners": The dance craze that swept the nation in the '30s and '40s is back. The class runs from 7 to 9 p.m. Fridays, Jan. 26 through March 9, in the Franklin County Career and Technology Center. The cost is $45.

-- "Ballroom Dancing": Beginners and those who want to learn new dance steps are welcome to try ballroom dancing. There will be two sessions: Beginners will dance from 6 to 7 p.m. Fridays, April 20 through June 8, and advanced dancers will come to class from 7 to 8 p.m. Fridays, April 20 through June 8, in the Franklin County Career and Technology Center. The cost is $45.

-- "Watercolor Techniques": This step-by-step demonstration class allows students to learn more about this painting technique. First-time students will have a supply list mailed to them before the start of class. Classes will begin Jan.16, March 6 and May 8. Each session will run between four and six weeks in length, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. The cost is between $60 and $90, depending on the length of the course.

-- "Master Class in Art": This class allows students to work on any art form that they wish, as long as it can be brought to class with them. Students will get feedback and help from the instructor as well as other student artists. There are three sessions, beginning Jan. 18, March 8 and May 10. Each session will run between four and six weeks in length, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. The cost is between $60 and $90, depending on the length of the course. For information, call (717) 709-0778.

-- "Woodcarving Basics": This course is designed to expose individuals to the different traditional woodworking styles including in-the-round, relief, chip and whittling.The class will carve an otter letter opener, bear or rabbit holding a heart, a caricature bear and other projects as time permits. Wood and tools are provided with the course. The class will be held from 6 to p.m. Tuesdays, Jan. 23 through Feb. 27, in the Franklin County Career and Technology Center.
