MONT ALTO, Pa. - After a year of virtual learning and seeing only half of people’s faces, Penn State Mont Alto wants students to see all that it offers as plans move forward for in-person classes starting Aug. 23.

Through Summer Admissions at Mont Alto, the campus is providing live and virtual opportunities for prospective students to learn about student life, academics and financial aid.

“I want them to get excited,” said Shawn Wiley, director of enrollment management at Penn State Mont Alto. “I want to see their faces.”

In-person tours are available at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday through Aug. 13. The maximum number allowed per tour is 24, with each potential Mont Alto student allowed to bring up to two guests.

All tour participants must complete a form acknowledging their consent to follow Penn State guidelines to prevent the spread of COVID-19, including wearing masks. But the restrictions could loosen.

“We know things are changing a bit,” Wiley said. “Summer could be a surprise.”

Another admissions event that is intended to be in-person is “Spend a Summer Day” from 10 a.m. to noon Aug. 13. That day, prospective students can take a tour, learn about life on campus, academics and costs, and participate in an application workshop.

For those who don’t feel comfortable with or whose schedules won’t permit on-campus visits, Penn State Mont Alto is hosting two “Ask Me Anything” events via Zoom.

The first is from 3 to 4 p.m. June 25, during which those considering attending classes at Mont Alto can ask students, faculty, staff and coaches questions about all aspects of the social and residential experiences on campus.

From 3 to 4 p.m. July 16, the director of academic affairs, instructors and students will provide answers about all things academic.

Other online-only options are open houses from 5 to 6:30 p.m. July 8 and 10 to 11:30 a.m. July 30. They will feature virtual tours and presentations on the admissions process, academics, student life and financing.

“You name it, we try it,” Wiley said of ways to spread the word about what the Mont Alto campus has to offer.

While clicking through the tabs on the Mont Alto website (montalto.psu.edu) is informative, Wiley stressed the advantages of participating in the summer admissions events, be they online or in person.

“Looking at the information (online) can’t communicate 100% of what they’re looking for,” he said. “By coming to the live events, they put faces with names.”

Another bonus is the waiving of the $65 application fee for those who sign up for one of the Summer Admissions at Mont Alto opportunities.
