Nursing center co-hosts Alzheimer's Disease and Dementia Care Virtual Conference

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — The Tressa Nese and Helen Diskevich Center of Geriatric Nursing Excellence welcomes all to join the upcoming Centre County Geriatric Interest Network (GIN) Alzheimer's Disease and Dementia Care Virtual Conference.

The conference will be held virtually on Nov. 18, and will feature keynote speakers Jeannine Shade, CDP, CADDCT from Foxdale Village, and Elizabeth Plozner-Chalfa, CDP, CADDCT from Juniper Village at Brookline. Registration cost is $40 per person for members and $80 for non-members and must be received by Nov. 10.

Goals of the event will aim to summarize the common types and stages of dementia; components of patient centered care; identify communication techniques to utilize when working with dementia clients; common causes of aggressive, repetitive and sundowning behaviors in older adults; and behavioral/care interventions that may be used to prevent, reduce or eliminate difficult care situations.

As well, the speakers will cover how to improve the quality of life of dementia patients through educating care providers; the sensitivity and respect for the dementia client; caregiver stress and utilizing stress reduction techniques; and articulating activity interventions that are success-oriented and failure-free.

The conference has been submitted for 8.0 contact hours for participants who hold a valid RN license, attend the entire session, and complete the evaluation; partial contact hours are not awarded. Contact Sandy Schuckers at 814-355-6716 for more contact hours information.

The Centre Country GIN is a group of individuals who realize the need for networking to enhance the sharing of information and collaborating of services to help the senior community in Centre County. Through regular education and networking meetings, GIN strives to meet the basic goals of education, advocacy, and networking.
