Beata Clapp joins Penn State as University’s biological safety officer

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Beata Clapp has joined Penn State as a senior biosafety officer, a position held in the Office of Environmental Health and Safety (EHS). As the University’s biological safety officer, Clapp will oversee a comprehensive biological safety program throughout all Penn State research, academic and service areas.

“We are excited to have Dr. Clapp join our EHS team as the University’s new senior biosafety officer,” said Jim Crandall, director of Environmental Health and Safety. “Dr. Clapp’s past experience as an infectious disease researcher coupled with her recent experience as a biosafety officer and high-containment laboratory manager ideally positions her to support our Penn State research community.”

Clapp joins Penn State after serving as the biosafety officer for the Texas Biomedical Research Institute, where she oversaw biosafety programs across research laboratories and animal areas with emphasis on the high and maximum containment laboratories and the Federal Select Agent Program.

“I couldn’t be more excited to join the EHS team here at Penn State,” said Clapp. “The opportunity to be back in such a vibrant and research-oriented university setting is something I very much look forward to.”

Prior to her work at Texas Biomedical Research Institute, Clapp served as a postdoctoral research scholar and research scientist at Montana State University, as well as an assistant professor at the University of Florida.
