With the onset of winter weather, those traveling on campus are encouraged to consider the conditions and how they may impact travel. The Penn State Office of Physical Plant (OPP) and Transportation Services would like to remind the University community about safe traveling habits on campus.

Motor vehicle operators

  • Keep all windows and mirrors free of snow, ice and salt spray to maximize visibility.
  • Park in areas that are clear of ice and snow to help prevent falls when getting in and out of vehicles.
  • If a “Midnight Clear” is declared, avoid parking in faculty/staff surface parking areas between midnight and 7 a.m.
  • Slow down when approaching a snowplow or other snow removal equipment.
  • If needing to maneuver near a snowplow or other snow removal equipment, try to make eye contact with the operator before proceeding.

Pedestrians

  • Avoid sidewalk snowplows and other snow removal equipment, whenever possible.
  • Be particularly careful when walking on steps, ramps and any uneven surfaces.
  • Wear footwear that provides good traction and insulation.

Cyclists

  • Use safety gear that allows you to be seen, such as front and rear lighting and high-visibility clothing.
  • Take turns slowly to avoid tires from slipping.
  • Gradually apply brakes to avoid losing control.

For the sake of personal and campus safety, please travel with caution this winter when on and off campus. If roadway or sidewalk conditions need immediate assistance, call the OPP Work Reception Center at 814-865-4731.
