Registration open for Penn State Conference on Academic Advising

Register by Sept. 4; virtual conference set for Sept. 18, in-person at Innovation Park on Sept. 21

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Registration is now open for the 22nd Penn State Conference on Academic Advising, set for Sept. 18 and 21.  

Faculty and staff interested in supporting students or academic advising are invited to attend. In addition to traditional keynote speakers and concurrent sessions covering a range of topics, participants will have an opportunity to network with colleagues and engage in optional professional development through informal meet-ups, articles and other relevant resources and scholarship. 

The virtual conference will be held from 11 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. Sept. 18 and will be managed through Whova, an all-in-one event management software that will help participants engage with the sessions and connect with other participants. 

The in-person conference will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 21 at the Penn Stater Hotel and Conference Center at Innovation Park.

The annual Conference on Academic Advising is sponsored by Penn State's Division of Undergraduate Studies (DUS) in partnership with the Office of Undergraduate Education, Penn State’s University Advising Council, and “The Mentor: Innovative Scholarship on Academic Advising.”  

This October, DUS will be celebrating the 50th anniversary of its founding. Following the theme of history, Janet Schulenberg, senior director of DUS, will deliver the virtual keynote session on Monday, Sept. 18, on the history of academic advising. Ed Venit, managing director for EAB, Starfish’s parent company, will deliver the keynote session for the in-person conference on Thursday, Sept. 21. Venit’s session will look to the future of student success. 

Concurrent sessions cover a range of topics, including strategies to support students, using technology, and supporting academic advisers.

  • WE ARE Conquering Burnout: Overcoming #AdvisorAtrophy 

  • Bridging the Gap: How Peer Advisers Complement Professional Advising Strategies and Foster Student Success 

  • Metaphors in Advising
