Penn State World Campus student is first Navy scholarship recipient

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- For five years, Justin Scinocco was a Navy special warfare combatant-craft crewman (SWCC), a member of an elite team that supports Navy SEALS. He served in Iraq in 2003. In 2011, he enrolled in Penn State's World Campus to prepare for a medical career. For his Navy service and academic achievements, Scinocco has been chosen to receive the first Alexander P. Fletcher Navy Student Award presented by the World Campus.

"I'm beyond honored to be the first recipient of the Fletcher Navy Student Award," said Scinocco, who is enrolled in the online bachelor of arts degree in psychology. "I'm putting the award to good use buying my books this semester."

This award honors and recognizes outstanding academic achievement by an undergraduate World Campus student who has a naval background.

Scinocco, 34, lives in Hicksville, N.Y., on Long Island. He enlisted in the Navy in 1996 and was one of only 618 SWCCs. He held the rank of petty officer second class at his discharge in 2001. In 2003, he was recalled to serve in Iraq.

He previously worked at Newsday, becoming a top advertising salesman, before deciding to pursue a medical career. After taking pre-medicine courses at Hofstra University, he chose to enroll in Penn State's World Campus.

"Learning online is a good match for me, because I'm pretty self-disciplined," Scinocco said. He also is inspired by this Salvador Dali quote: "Intelligence without ambition is a bird without wings."
