The president and CEO of a well-known State College-based highway construction company and his wife have established a scholarship at Pennsylvania College of Technology.
Daniel R. and Suzie Hawbaker recently created the Hawbaker Family Scholarship at Penn College. Daniel Hawbaker heads Glenn O. Hawbaker Inc., a firm established in 1952 that performs asphalt paving, road construction, gas well service and construction, and engineering design services in northern Pennsylvania, southern New York and eastern Ohio.
Two $1,000 scholarships will be awarded from the Hawbaker Family Scholarship Fund for the 2015-16 academic year; the recipients will be presented with $500 each in the fall 2015 and spring 2016 semesters.
First preference for scholarship awards will be to students who are employees (or dependents of employees) of Glenn O. Hawbaker Inc., are enrolled full time in any academic major and have successfully completed at least 24 credits at Penn College.
If no recipients meeting those criteria can be identified, preference will be given to full-time students who have graduated from the Bald Eagle Area, Bellefonte Area or Penns Valley Area school districts, and have successfully completed a program with the Central Pennsylvania Institute of Science and Technology; are enrolled in the diesel technician, diesel technology, heavy construction equipment technology (operator emphasis or technician emphasis), electromechanical maintenance technology, construction management, civil engineering technology (bachelor’s and associate) or surveying technology majors; and have successfully completed at least 24 credits at Penn College.
The scholarship is renewable; continuing students are eligible to receive additional awards from the fund, provided they have demonstrated academic performance and meet the award preference criteria.
“I place a high value on the applied technology education that Penn College delivers,” Dan Hawbaker said. “Our company employs many Penn College graduates, and without exception, they are ready to perform their first day on the job. We’re pleased to be able to establish this scholarship to help future students receive this high-quality education.”
“Penn College and Glenn O. Hawbaker have a long-existing partnership, and Dan and Suzie have been tremendous advocates for us,” said Davie Jane Gilmour, president of Penn College. “We’re extremely grateful to them for creating this scholarship and further demonstrating their commitment to the type of education we provide.”
