WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. — Students looking for a meaningful next step in their education should plan a spring road trip to Pennsylvania College of Technology, where leading-edge technology complements a hands-on philosophy that has been a hallmark for more than a century.
The college will hold an Open House from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, March 24 — with an emphasis on “open” — where departments and services across its campuses provide a truly accessible first exposure to “degrees that work.”
Visiting campus is crucial when choosing where to enroll, and prospective students are encouraged to “see it all” during the 6-hour event.
“Open House is an opportunity for students at every stage of the college exploration process to experience all that Penn College has to offer,” said Audriana L. Empet, associate director of admissions. “The entire campus community looks forward to welcoming our guests to campus on March 24.”
Exemplifying the myriad activities befitting a national leader in hands-on education, guests can engage in robotic combat, build a 3-D model of a home, see a working sawmill, virtually paint a vehicle or wield a welding torch, participate in mock surgical procedures and practice masonry.
Exciting new majors include brewing and fermentation science, applied and entrepreneurial innovation, metal fabrication technology, and concrete science.
In addition to illuminating opportunities in Penn College’s six academic schools, Open House guests will get a peek into the campus-life side of higher education — NCAA Division III athletics, Greek life and student organizations, for instance.
Faculty, deans, students and alumni will answer questions and guide visitors; dining facilities and The College Store will be open for visitors’ convenience; and departments across campus will be available until the last family’s curiosity is satisfied.
Free shuttle transportation will be available on main campus, as well as to nearby campuses hosting additional majors: the Schneebeli Earth Science Center near Allenwood and the Lumley Aviation Center in Montoursville.
“The day offers a wide range of activities so that visitors may design a schedule centered around their interests,” Empet said. Enhancements to the college’s Open House website — www.pct.edu/openhouse — have added a level of personalization to an already user-friendly experience.
Under general headings that include “Discover Penn College” and “Academic Activities,” as well as additional programming focused on support services and campus life, the site offers visitors a convenient platform from which to build their itineraries for the day.
Menu options not only provide for attendance at helpful information sessions and campus tours, but also more specialized items on the to-do list — interaction with faculty and students in scores of curricular areas, among them.
The improvements were recently launched in conjunction with the start of registration for the March 24 event. Those unable to attend may schedule a campus tour or mark their calendars for Fall Open House, scheduled for Sunday, Oct. 28.
