WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. — Two Pennsylvania College of Technology faculty have co-authored a peer-reviewed article for the World History Bulletin, a publication of the World History Association.
Craig A. Miller, professor of history/political science and department head of social sciences and humanities, and Jennifer R. Wahl, instructor of social sciences, have published “History from the ‘Other’ Side: Approaches to Learning and Teaching the Past From Neglected and Marginalized Voices” in the latest issue of the journal. Their article focuses on strategies for diversifying World History courses for high school and college classes, with particular focus on how to understand and incorporate the voices and perspectives of marginalized groups. The piece also offers classroom activities to help instructors and students explore underrepresented voices.
The theme of the journal’s current issue, “Democratizing, Diversifying, and Decolonizing the World History Survey,” developed from a panel discussion, featuring Miller and Wahl, at the 32nd Annual Meeting of the World History Association, held last year in Pittsburgh.
A biannual publication, the World History Bulletin is a forum devoted to raising interesting questions, stimulating lively debate and engaging with all aspects of world historical scholarship, including pedagogy, research and theory. Topics include any period or geographic focus in history.
Miller, who serves as the chief reader for the World History: Modern Advanced Placement exam, teaches world history, constitutional history, Native American history and international relations courses. He holds a doctoral degree in American Indian history, history of the Atlantic world, constitutional and legal history from the University of Buffalo, where he also earned a master’s degree in colonial history. He received his bachelor’s degree in history from SUNY Geneseo.
Wahl teaches world history, psychology and sociology courses at Penn College. A former teacher in the Loyalsock Township School District, she was named Pennsylvania State Teacher of the Year in 2018. Wahl earned a master’s degree in educational leadership from Penn State and a bachelor’s degree in history from Cabrini University.
