WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Three commencement ceremonies will be offered May 17-18 for the 950 students who have petitioned to graduate following the Spring 2019 semester at Pennsylvania College of Technology.
All of the ceremonies will be held at the Community Arts Center, 220 W. Fourth St., Williamsport, with more than 800 students expected to march.
At 3 p.m. on Friday, May 17, a ceremony will be held for students from the School of Industrial, Computing & Engineering Technologies and the School of Sciences, Humanities & Visual Communications. The student speaker will be Hannah G. Maize, of Riverside, who will receive a bachelor’s degree in plastics and polymer engineering technology.
On Saturday, May 18, two ceremonies are scheduled.
At 10 a.m. on May 18, students from the School of Construction & Design Technologies and the School of Health Sciences will receive their degrees. The student speaker will be Lauren S. Herr, of Lititz, who will be awarded a bachelor’s degree in construction management.
At 1:30 p.m. on May 18, a ceremony will be offered for students from the School of Business & Hospitality and the School of Transportation & Natural Resources Technologies. The student speaker will be David A. Gadalla, of Mechanicsburg, who will receive a bachelor’s degree in aviation maintenance technology.
Maize will receive the Plastics Faculty Award for the graduate who most exemplifies the characteristic of excellence in education, dedication to the profession and commitment to service. A Dean’s List student, she is a four-year member of the Society of Plastics Engineers and served as a resident assistant for three years.
Maize is a member of the Alpha Chi Honor Society and was chosen as an Awesome Woman Exemplar. She has accepted a position with Mitsubishi Chemical Advanced Materials.
Herr will receive the President’s Award for leadership and service to the college, and the Construction Management Faculty Award, presented to a graduate who has demonstrated exceptional leadership, professionalism, perseverance, participation, work ethic and commitment to the field.
A Dean’s List student, Herr served as president of the Women in Construction student organization and was a resident assistant. She was a member of the women’s soccer team, the Student Athlete Advisory Committee and the Construction Management Association. She will work for Centurion Construction Group LLC following graduation.
Gadalla will receive the President’s Award for leadership and service to the college. He is also a recipient of the Student Leader Legacy Scholarship. A Dean’s List student, he served in two officer positions for the Student Government Association: executive vice president and vice president for internal relations.
He served as a student ambassador, a resident assistant, a lead Connections link and Connections link, and a community peer educator. He also worked at the Student Activities Information Desk. This summer, Gadalla will serve as an orientation intern for Student Activities before pursuing a master’s degree in higher education at the University of Pittsburgh.
During the ceremonies, the college will present Distinguished Teaching Awards to Penn College faculty. In addition, Distinguished Alumnus Award, Humanitarian Award and Alumni Achievement Award honors will be presented.
Degrees will be conferred by President Davie Jane Gilmour, accompanied on May 17 by Sen. Gene Yaw, chairman of the college’s Board of Directors, and on May 18 by Michael J. DiRaimo, a member of the board.
