Pennsylvania College of Technology has named winners in its 2014 cake competition, sponsored by CalJava International.

Lynnette F. Stegmaier, of Muncy Valley, was awarded first place in the “Destination Wedding”-themed contest. Her red fondant-covered cake represents a Chinese wedding and features hand-formed gum-paste dragons, a lotus topper, and good wishes for the couple, hand-painted in Chinese script.

In addition, Stegmaier’s cake received the People’s Choice Award, chosen by visitors to the competition.

Second place – for a Las Vegas-themed cake with a roulette wheel and hand-sculpted 1953 Cadillac Eldorado – was awarded to Kristina M. Williams, of South Williamsport.

Third place went to Samantha-Jo M. Bradley, of Middlebury Center, for her seaside wedding cake.

Judges for the competition were Kim Morrison, two-time Grand Prize winner of the National Wedding Cake Competition and owner of Cakes for Occasions in Spring Mills; Tammie Holsinger, owner of Cove Party Supply in Roaring Spring and host of her own cake-decorating competition; and Jennifer Eckert, who earned degrees in baking and pastry arts and technology management from Penn College.

Daniel Budiman, a renowned cake decorator and owner of CalJava International, a cake decorating supply company, devised the competition after twice visiting Penn College to offer demonstrations to baking and pastry arts classes. He sponsors prizes for the winners to encourage the students to continue developing their budding decorating skills.

The People’s Choice contest raised funds for the YWCA of Northcentral Pennsylvania’s Liberty House, a bridge-housing program for Lycoming County women (and women with children) who are homeless.

The cakes will be displayed on the first floor of the college’s Madigan Library through March 28. They will then be entered in the Cake Decorating Extravaganza Contest, part of the Atlantic Bakery Deli Dairy Expo at the Atlantic City Convention Center.
