It's time for a blood drive: Penn State, WVU challenge to aid American Red Cross

University Park employees, students encouraged to donate blood on Aug. 29 in advance of football game at WVU on Aug. 31

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — This football season, the competition between the Nittany Lions and the Mountaineers will extend beyond the field. The Penn State University Staff Advisory Council (USAC) has been challenged by the staff council at West Virginia University in a blood drive competition prior to the Penn State football game at West Virginia on Aug. 31. The institution that receives the most blood donations from its community as part of the challenge will be announced as the winner during the football game.

Penn Staters are encouraged to participate in the challenge to secure the Nittany Lions’ blood-drive victory. University Park students, faculty and staff can donate blood from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 29, at Heritage Hall in the HUB-Robeson Center

"This challenge, organized by WVU’s Staff Council and the Penn State USAC, is a great opportunity to combine support for the American Red Cross with a little healthy competition,” said Rachel Galloway, Penn State assistant director for the Center for Spiritual & Ethical Development and immediate past chair of USAC. “USAC is proud to support this blood drive and to come out victorious with the help of the Penn State community."

According to the American Red Cross, blood donations are used for patients in need of surgery, cancer treatment and transfusions for blood loss from traumatic injuries. One donation can help save more than one life.

Participants should register for the Aug. 29 blood drive via the American Red Cross Website at RedCrossBlood.org or through the American Red Cross Blood Donor app, or by calling 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767), or by enabling the Blood Donor Skill on any Alexa Echo device.
