Lecture to explore use of AI in refugee resettlement
3:00 PM - 4:00 PM / February 17, 2025
UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — The Penn State Center for Socially Responsible Artificial Intelligence (CSRAI) will host Šimon Schierreich, a doctoral student at the Faculty of Information Technology Czech Technical University in Prague, as part of its Young Achievers Symposium. Schierreich’s talk will discuss existing algorithms, models and results that address refugee redistribution and housing.
The talk will take place from 3 to 4 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 17, in E202 Westgate Building on the University Park campus and will also be accessible via Zoom.
According to Schierreich, refugee resettlement has emerged as a critical global issue in recent years as a complex, multi-stage process that presents several challenges. Schierreich’s talk will explore how artificial intelligence is being used to address these issues. He will also discuss the gaps in current research and the practical challenges that must be overcome to deploy these models in real-world scenarios.
Schierreich’s broader research focuses on computational social choice, algorithmic game theory and collective decision-making. In particular, he is interested in restrictions that make computationally hard problems related to these fields tractable. He is currently a visiting Fulbright Fellow in Penn State’s College of Information Sciences and Technology.
This talk is part of CSRAI’s Young Achievers Symposium, which highlights early career researchers in diverse fields of AI for social impact. CSRAI promotes high-impact, transformative AI research and development, while encouraging the consideration of social and ethical implications in all such efforts. The center supports a broad range of activities from foundational research to the application of AI to all areas of human endeavor.
