UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — The Arts and Design Research Incubator (ADRI) launches its fall 2018 programming lineup with a dialogue on Tuesday, Aug. 28, titled, “Atmospheres: Mapping Ambiances to Design Spaces for Affect.” Yasmine Abbas, strategic designer and assistant teaching professor in the Stuckeman School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture, will share her current research on building atmospheres; their representation through the experimental process of mapping ambiances led at architecture schools in France, Japan, and the United States; and the potential for computational design.
ADRI dialogues are lunchtime talks exploring the interdisciplinary space in arts research. They take place from noon to 1 p.m. on select Tuesdays. In addition to the dialogues, a variety of participatory workshops and events, including special presentations and performances by guest artists, will take place at the ADRI throughout fall semester.
Selections include several Feldenkrais workshops, led by Carol Kress, guild-certified Feldenkrais practitioner and master trainer, and Andrew Belser, ADRI director and professor of movement, voice and acting; a combined dialogue and workshop on Dalcroze Eurhythmics led by David Frego, professor and director of the School of Music; and a variety of workshops and discussions on the origins and creation of pigments and dyes, coordinated and hosted by newly embedded ADRI researchers Sarah K. Rich, associate professor, and Daniel Zolli, assistant professor in the Department of Art History.
Rebecca Strzelec, professor of visual arts at Penn State Altoona, will provide a dialogue and workshop on creating jewelry from found objects; and Marike Splint, assistant professor in the School of Theater, Film, and Television at the University of California, Los Angeles, will join the ADRI for a weeklong residency to work with Penn State students and provide a dialogue, workshop, and performance-in-progress on topics related to performance in public space that explores the relationship among people, places and identity.
“This semester’s lineup genuinely represents not only the interdisciplinary work, but the truly innovative nature of the research we do and what we support at the ADRI,” said Belser. “The programming has evolved to really capture the essence and collaborative function of the ADRI. We’re bringing in artists and researchers from all over Penn State — from across the nation. The hope is to connect presenters and audience members from multiple disciplines and across domains through this programming, and to open new channels for groundbreaking, cross-disciplinary work to come out of those connections.”
Other topics include a two-day “3D Forensic Facial Reconstruction” workshop led by forensic artist Jenny Kenyon; a cross-disciplinary panel on “Communicating Science through the Arts” moderated by Lee Ahern, associate professor in the Donald P. Bellisario College of Communications; and, in collaboration with the Palmer Museum of Art, a screening and discussion of “Poustinia: The Art of Gendron Jensen,” a documentary short, produced and directed by Kristian Berg, about a man passionately devoted to his artistic calling of drawing detailed, precise images of bones.
All ADRI programs are free and open to the public, but registration is required for venues with limited seating. The full list of dialogues, workshops and events appears below. Descriptions and additional details are available on the ADRI website.
