Children’s Hospital to showcase latest advances at Pediatric Research Day

Researchers and caregivers collaborate to improve quality of care for young patients

HERSHEY, Pa. — The Department of Pediatrics at Penn State Children’s Hospital will present the ninth Pediatric Research Day from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Thursday, May 24, at the Hershey Lodge.

The event covers campuswide pediatric research, including basic/laboratory, clinical, public health, quality improvement and education research. It gives faculty an opportunity to present their own research and see what colleagues are working on.

“By sharing our knowledge through forums such as Pediatric Research Day, we contribute to improving children's health everywhere," said Dr. Barbara Miller, chief of pediatric hematology and oncology and vice chair for research at the Children's Hospital.

In addition to live presentations, 139 abstracts and posters will be on display. Research presented will highlight achievements by faculty, nurses, fellows and residents, as well as medical and graduate students, along with their collaborators from other departments at Penn State College of Medicine and at University Park.

The keynote speaker will be Pieter Dorrestein, director of the Collaborative Mass Spectrometry Innovation Center and co-director of the Institute of Metabolomics Medicine at the University of California, San Diego. He will present on “Digitizing the Chemistry of Microbes.” Dorrestein is a professor in the Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences.

Guest lecturer Conrad Tucker, principal investigator and site director at the National Science Foundation Center for Health Organization Transformation at Penn State, will speak on “Advancing Personalized Health Care through Big Data and Machine Learning.” Tucker is an associate professor of engineering design and industrial engineering and affiliate faculty of computer science and engineering.

The agenda also features:

  • K Club presentations — 1:20-2:10 p.m.
  • Senior faculty presentations — 3:30-4:30 p.m.
  • Young Investigators Awards — 4:30-4:45 p.m.

Pediatric Research Day has been a biennial event, but will now take place annually to accommodate the large number of entries and to allow researchers to present current projects. Next year’s event is scheduled for March 13, 2019.
