The psychology department at Penn State Greater Allegheny is one of the sponsors of a national conference on the psychology of women being held March 3-6. 2016 in Pittsburgh.
The theme this year of the 2016 Association for Women in Psychology conference is "Strong Girls and Wise Women," and features an array of events from research posters and papers to workshops and discussions.
Two faculty members from the psychology department will be presenting at the conference. Department coordinator and professor, Margaret Signorella, has a poster and paper presentation, and will also be participating in discussions on feminist history and activism.
Signorella's poster describes preliminary research, conducted with Lynn S. Liben at the psychology department at University Park campus, that aims to understand why students pursue STEM-related majors. Her paper addresses the controversy over single-sex education and how news reports fail to provide a full understanding of how educational programs are assessed.
Associate Professor Elizabeth Mazur has a poster discussing benefits and challenges of online dating by young women with disabilities. Mazur notes that this is an area in which there is little research currently and identifies what needs to be studied in future work.
